Lead magnet examples you can actually steal (mine included)

TL;DR Most lead magnet examples pages give you screenshots of other people's freebies and a sentence each. This is a swipe file instead: the three live magnets on this site pulled apart line by line (headline, bullets, button, reassurance, delivery email) with the reason each line exists, plus fill-in-the-blank formulas, famous magnets explained by mechanic, and a chooser that picks your format by the hours you've actually got. Drop your email below and it unlocks instantly.

Why most lead magnets are s**t

Because they don't do what they're supposed to do. A lead magnet has four jobs: build trust in you, move the reader a step along their journey, name or diagnose a pain they've got, and fix one piece of a bigger problem so they end up closer to fixing the whole thing. Generic freebies do none of those. That's why the downloads folder is a graveyard of "ultimate guides" nobody opened twice.

The fix is specificity. A lead magnet is a filter, not a net: write the title so the wrong people don't want it and the right person can't leave without it. Then the building is the quick bit (an evening, with AI). The slow bit is finding out what your ideal customer is stuck on, in their words, and breaking that into baby steps you can solve one at a time.

What's in the swipe file

  • Three live magnets dissected: the Marketing Brief Template, the AI Prompt Pack and the Pipeline Review Template, element by element, with a "why" on every line and a copy button on every block.
  • The formulas: six headline patterns, the four-bullet structure, six button texts, three reassurance lines, two delivery-email skeletons, five subject lines.
  • Eight famous magnets explained by mechanic, from HubSpot's Website Grader to a bank's mortgage calculator, each with the pattern to steal (not the copy).
  • The format chooser: template, checklist, tool, swipe file, prompt pack, quiz, ebook: build time, what you need, who each one filters for.
  • The filter rule and the follow-up: what to send after the download so the email is earned, not just captured.

One example, dissected here for free

The gate on this site's Marketing Brief Template, line by line:

Headline "The marketing brief template that stops budgets becoming donations." Names the thing and the painful outcome it prevents. Only someone about to spend money wants it. Good.

Gate body "Drop your email and the template unlocks instantly (and lands in your inbox too, so you can find it again). No card, no trial, no upsell waiting behind it." Answers the three silent objections in order: what happens now, what happens later, what's the catch.

Button "Send me the template." First person, names the thing. Never "Submit".

Reassurance "You'll also get G's Marketing Letters: one short, useful letter every weekday, nothing for sale. Unsubscribe any time." This is the consent line. It says plainly what else the email signs you up for, next to the form, so what follows is expected. That's the relationship AND the law.

The file does that to all three magnets, including the delivery emails, and then gives you the formulas behind every line.

Fair questions

Is the lead magnet swipe file really free?

Yes. The whole file for an email address: three live magnets dissected, the formulas, the public examples by mechanic and the format chooser. You also get G’s Marketing Letters (one short marketing letter every weekday, nothing for sale) and you can unsubscribe any time without losing the file.

What is a good lead magnet example for a small business?

One that does four jobs for one specific person: builds trust, moves them a step along their journey, names a pain they have, and fixes one piece of a bigger problem. A year-end checklist for company directors does all four. A generic "free marketing guide" does none. The best small-business examples are templates, checklists, calculators and short swipe files, because they let someone do the job today.

Do lead magnets still work in 2026?

Yes, but the format has shifted. The evidence shows a decline for generic ebooks and webinars alongside stronger performance for interactive and immediately usable formats: quizzes, scorecards, calculators, templates. The thing that died is the PDF nobody opens, not the mechanic of trading something useful for an email.

How long does a lead magnet take to make?

A checklist takes about an hour. A fillable template one or two evening hours. A calculator or working tool an evening with AI. A swipe file an evening. The slow part is the research into what your customer is actually stuck on, not the building. Ebooks and whitepapers take weeks and are rarely worth it at small-business scale.

Can I make someone accept marketing emails to get a download in the UK?

Not by bundling them. UK GDPR and PECR mean consent to marketing must be freely given and specific: you cannot make it a hidden condition of the download. The clean way, which this site uses, is to say plainly next to the form what the email gets them (the resource and the letters) and to make leaving easy. The ICO’s direct marketing guidance is the reference; this is not legal advice.
