What information we collect, use, and why

We collect or use the following information for service updates or marketing purposes:

• Names and contact details
• Marketing preferences
• Location data
• IP addresses
• Website and app user journey information
• Records of consent, where appropriate

In practice, for the newsletter that means: the email address you give us, whether you opened an email and which links you clicked, roughly where in the world you were when you opened it, and which page or link you signed up from. We don't ask for your name, your company, or your phone number.

We collect or use the following personal information for dealing with queries, complaints or claims:

• Names and contact details
• Correspondence

Cookies and tracking

Analytics, only if you say yes. We use Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages are useful. It is off by default: no analytics cookies are set unless you accept in the small prompt that appears on your first visit. If you decline (or ignore it), you can browse the whole site with no analytics cookies at all. Your choice is remembered in your browser, and you can change your mind by clearing this site's data in your browser settings, which brings the prompt back.

A couple of pages store what you type on your own device: the fillable templates (like the Marketing Brief Template) save your answers in your browser's local storage so they're still there when you come back. That information never leaves your device and we can't see it. Your analytics choice is remembered the same way.

Two things also load from other companies' servers on every page:

• The signup form, which is provided by beehiiv and loads inside a frame on the page.
• Fonts, which load from Google Fonts. This means Google receives your IP address when you visit.

We also use a small script from beehiiv that records which page you were on when you signed up, so we know which content is worth writing more of. It does not store anything on your device.

Lawful bases and your rights

Under UK data protection law, we must have a "lawful basis" for collecting and using your personal information. You can read more about lawful bases on the ICO's website.

For the newsletter, our lawful basis is consent. You gave us your email address and asked for the letters. You can withdraw that consent at any time. Every email has an unsubscribe link at the bottom, and it works immediately. No win-back sequence, no hard feelings.

For dealing with queries, complaints or claims, our lawful basis is legitimate interests. When someone replies to one of our emails or contacts us with a question, complaint or claim, we use their contact details and the correspondence itself so we can read it, reply to them, and keep a record of what was said. This benefits the person, because they get an answer to the question they asked us, and it benefits us, because we can handle queries properly and improve what we send. The impact on the person is minimal: they chose to contact us, we only use the information they sent us, we do not use it for any other purpose, and we do not share it with anyone other than our email provider. Anyone can ask us to delete their correspondence at any time.

Your rights under UK data protection law are:

• Right of access: ask us for copies of your personal information.
• Right to rectification: ask us to correct information you think is inaccurate or incomplete.
• Right to erasure: ask us to delete your personal information.
• Right to restriction of processing: ask us to limit how we use it.
• Right to object to processing: object to us using it.
• Right to data portability: ask us to transfer it to you or to another organisation.
• Right to withdraw consent: where we rely on consent, withdraw it at any time.

Some exemptions apply, and which rights are available depends on the lawful basis. You can read more about your rights on the ICO's website. To make a request, email hello@themarketingg.com. We must respond without undue delay and within one month.

Where we get personal information from

Directly from you. We have never bought, rented or scraped a mailing list, and we never will. If you are on the list, it is because you typed your email address into a form and asked to be.

How long we keep information

• Newsletter subscribers: we keep your email address and engagement history for as long as you're subscribed. If you unsubscribe, beehiiv keeps a record that you unsubscribed so we don't accidentally email you again. Ask us to delete you entirely and we will.
• Subscribers who stop engaging: if you haven't opened or clicked anything for 24 months, we'll remove you from the list.
• Correspondence: emails you send us are kept for up to 24 months, then deleted, unless there's an ongoing reason to keep them.

Who we share information with

These are our data processors. They handle personal information on our behalf as part of a service they provide to us:

• beehiiv Inc. (newsletter and email platform, United States): they host our newsletter mailing list and send our emails on our behalf. They store subscribers' email addresses, record whether emails were opened and which links were clicked, and record where a subscriber signed up from.
• Vercel Inc. (website hosting, United States): they host our website. Their servers keep standard technical logs of visits, which include visitors' IP addresses.
• Google LLC (font delivery and analytics, United States): the fonts on this site are served by Google Fonts, so Google receives visitors' IP addresses. If you consent to analytics, Google Analytics also processes usage data about your visit (pages viewed, approximate location, device type) on our behalf so we can see which content is useful.

We don't sell your information, and we don't share it with advertisers.

Sharing information outside the UK

Where necessary, we transfer personal information outside of the UK. When doing so, we comply with the UK GDPR and make sure appropriate safeguards are in place.

• beehiiv Inc.: newsletter and email marketing platform, United States. Transfer safeguard: Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs).
• Vercel Inc.: website hosting, United States. Transfer safeguard: Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs).
• Google LLC: font delivery and analytics, United States. Transfer safeguard: Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs).

Our processors may also share personal information with their own sub-processors (cloud hosting, infrastructure and email delivery providers) in the United States and other countries, under the same safeguards.

How to complain

If you're still unhappy after raising it with us, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office:
